What is a good book for a child starting preschool?
At three, the book is not really about school. It is about the leaving, and about the fact that you come back. Three is a separation problem, not a school problem
It is easy to over-prepare a three-year-old for the wrong thing. Parents rehearse the classroom, the teacher's name, the routine — and the child, who has not been listening to any of that, asks the only question they have: are you staying?
Everything else at that age is downstream of the answer. Which is why the best preschool books are structurally simple: someone leaves, the day happens, someone comes back. The middle can be four pages of cubby and snack and carpet. The beginning and the end are the book.
The second thing worth knowing is that three-year-olds have no clock. Telling a child you will be back at noon transmits nothing. Should the book talk about crying at drop-off?

What you want to avoid is a book that spends most of its pages inside the distress — at bedtime, that is rehearsing the distress rather than the day.
My child is two, not three. Does this still work?
