Why the hero should look like your child

Ask what home sounds like and a Caribbean family can tell you in a sentence: a grandmother who slips into Patois when the story gets good, a cousin who answers in Spanish, a Sunday pot that has been going since morning. The names carry the same range — Kemar and Shanice, Nadège and Josué, Yadiel and Luisa, Ravi and Priya, Kadeem and Aaliyah — and whichever one is yours is printed on the cover exactly as you type it.

Caribbean writers and illustrators have given children real books: Anansi retellings, island-set picture books, stories that sound like home. A true bilingual edition puts English and Spanish on every spread, or English and French (not Kreyòl) if that is what your family reads. Portuguese and Mandarin are available too.
