Answer
Can I get a storybook about what my child’s name means?
Yes — the Name Story theme builds the plot out of what the child's name actually means. You enter the name, it is looked up in a curated database of more than 1,600 names spanning Yoruba, Hebrew, Latin, Sanskrit, Arabic and other origins, and the story is written as a short hero's journey that embodies that meaning rather than announcing it. A name meaning "brave" produces a story about courage that never uses the word as a lecture.
The child is still illustrated as the hero from one photo, and the dedication page prints the meaning itself: "Your name means … May you grow into every letter of it." Ready in about a minute. Digital $9.99, softcover $29.99, hardcover $39.99, free shipping. The story and illustrations are AI-generated, and the preview is free.

Embodied, not preached
The failure mode of a name-meaning book is obvious once you have read one: the story stops to explain itself. "Your name means brave, and being brave is important." Children stop listening at exactly that sentence.
The Name Story theme is written the other way round. The meaning determines what the story is about — the challenge the child faces, the choice they make, how it resolves — and the word itself is left to the dedication page. A child hearing the story understands what their name means because they watched themselves do it, not because they were told.
Where the meanings come from
The database is curated rather than automatically harvested, which is why it is in the low thousands rather than tens of thousands of entries. It spans Yoruba, Hebrew, Latin, Sanskrit, Arabic and other origins so that the coverage is not limited to Anglo-Western names — the names most likely to be missing from a generic meanings lookup are often the ones the family cares most about.
When a name is not in the database, you are not asked to fill in the meaning. The missing name is logged for curation instead, and uncommon names are typically added within about a week. That is a deliberate design choice: a parent guessing at their own child’s name meaning produces a worse book than waiting for a real entry.
What you get, and what to pair it with
The book is 8 × 8 inches square, printed on 170 gsm (65 lb) coated silk in softcover or hardcover, with the digital PDF included in both. The Name Story arc is short by design; the rest of the book is the keepsake matter that makes it worth shelving — a fillable bookplate, a glossary of the names that appear in the story, a first-reading page and photo-paste memory pages.
Two pairings come up repeatedly. As a naming-day or christening gift it works with a signed dedication from a godparent. And when the name comes from a family language, a bilingual edition puts the meaning in both languages on the same page. For the underlying mechanics, see how the photo becomes the illustration.

Frequently asked questions
How does a name-meaning storybook work?
You pick the Name Story theme and enter your child’s name. The name is looked up in a curated meanings database, and the meaning becomes the story arc — a short hero’s journey in which the child lives out what their name means. The meaning is embodied in the plot rather than stated as a moral, and it is printed explicitly on the dedication page.
How many names are in the database?
More than 1,600, curated rather than scraped, and deliberately broad: Yoruba, Hebrew, Latin, Sanskrit, Arabic and other origins, covering popular Western, African, Hispanic and Asian names.
What if my child’s name is not in the database?
You are not asked to supply the meaning yourself. Missing names are logged and added by the team during curation, and uncommon names are typically added within about a week. You can make the book on any other theme in the meantime.
What does the dedication page say?
For a Name Story book the dedication is built from the meaning — for example: "For Olivia — Your name means olive tree — Latin. May you grow into every letter of it." If you are giving the book, your own signature is appended underneath as "From …".
Is the child still illustrated from a photo?
Yes. The Name Story theme changes the story, not the illustration pipeline. You upload one photo and the child appears as the illustrated hero throughout, in whichever of the nine art styles you choose.
How long is the Name Story?
The meaning arc itself runs about five pages — it is written as a tight mini-story rather than being stretched. It sits inside the same 35-page, 8 × 8 inch book as every other Akoni title, with the usual keepsake pages: a bookplate, a glossary of the names in the story, a draw-your-favourite-part page, an about-me page and photo-paste memory pages.
Is this a good gift for a naming ceremony or christening?
It is one of the better fits, because the meaning of the name is the occasion. The printed book includes a bookplate page with blank to, from, date and location lines you can fill in on the day, and the dedication can be signed from you.
Can it be bilingual?
Yes — English plus Spanish, French, Portuguese or Mandarin, both languages on every page including the translated dedication, for $10 more on any format. That is a common pairing when the name comes from the second language’s culture.
