What actually happens, step by step
- You enter the child’s name and age. Ages 2 to 10 are supported. The age changes sentence length, vocabulary and how much conflict the story carries.
- You upload one photo. JPG, PNG or HEIC. A clear, front-facing photo of a single child’s face in good light gives the most accurate likeness. You confirm you have permission to use the photo.
- You pick a theme and an art style. There are nine art styles, and themes ranging from adventure and bedtime to birthday, first day of school, new baby and a story built on the meaning of the child’s name.
- The story and the illustrations are generated. Both are AI-generated. The photo is used as the visual reference so the same child appears consistently from page to page rather than shifting between illustrations.
- You get a free preview. The illustrated cover, the dedication page and the first three illustrated pages, with no card required. The rest of the story text is readable; the remaining illustrations unlock after purchase.

Photo-based versus avatar-based personalization

An Akoni book is 35 pages at 8 × 8 inches square, printed on 170 gsm (65 lb) coated silk for the softcover and hardcover editions. The sequence is fixed: a title page, then a dedication page, then a bookplate page with fillable to, from, date and location lines, then up to 16 illustrated story pages, then keepsake back matter — a glossary of the names in the story, a "our first reading" page, a draw-your-favourite-part page, an about-me page, and photo-paste memory pages.
On the photo: The uploaded photo is automatically deleted from Akoni’s servers within 24 hours of the book being made (usually within minutes). It is never used to train AI models.

How many photos do I need to upload?

Does the illustrated child actually look like my child?
That is the point of the photo. The child is illustrated with their own face, skin tone and hair rather than being represented by a preset avatar you configure from dropdowns. Are the illustrations AI-generated?
Yes. Both the story text and the illustrations in an Akoni Books book are generated by AI, using your photo as the visual reference for the child. Every book runs through an automated vision check before it ships, and pages that fail are regenerated.
What happens to my child’s photo afterwards?
The original photograph is automatically deleted from Akoni’s servers within 24 hours of the book being made, usually within minutes. It is never used to train AI models. The illustrated character derived from it is kept alongside your book so you can re-download the book and access the printable extras later.
What if I do not have a usable photo?
You can still make the book. On the create page there is a "Don’t have a photo? Choose a character instead" option that lets you pick an illustrated character rather than uploading a photograph. The story personalization — name, age, theme — works the same way.
