Yes. You can have a storybook made in which your child is the actual hero of an original story — not a name dropped into a template that was written for everyone. With Akoni Books you enter the child's name and age (anywhere from 2 to 10), pick a theme and one of 9 art styles, and upload one photo. The photo is the visual reference, so the child is illustrated to look like themselves on every page.

Most popular themes finish in about a minute; a fully custom story takes 4–6 minutes. You see the illustrated cover and opening pages free before paying — no card needed. Digital $9.99, softcover $29.99, hardcover $39.99. The story text and illustrations are AI-generated.

Three levels of "the hero", and what each one means

The phrase "a book where my child is the hero" covers three quite different products, and the difference matters when you are deciding what to buy.

  1. Name substitution. A pre-written, pre-illustrated story with your child’s name printed into it. Fast and polished, but the character in the pictures is not your child and the plot is identical for every buyer.
  2. Avatar customization. You configure a character — skin tone, hair, glasses — from menus, and that avatar appears in a pre-written story. Closer, but the likeness is a set of options rather than a portrait.
  3. Photo-based, generated story. The story is written around this child and the illustrations use their photo as the reference, so the same recognisable child appears on every page. This is what Akoni Books does. See how the photo actually becomes the illustration, or the comparison of the major personalized book services for which category each one falls into.

What you choose when you make the book

The required inputs are small on purpose: the child’s name, their age, one photo, a theme and an art style. Everything else is optional. Opening the "Deeper customization" panel adds four fields — interests, people or pets to include, a lesson for the story to carry, and a setting — and switches generation onto the bespoke path, which writes the story from scratch around what you typed. That is the 4–6 minute route; without it, the book is ready in about a minute.

Two extras are worth knowing about before you start. You can add a second language, which puts the whole story in English plus Spanish, French, Portuguese or Mandarin on every page. And you can sign the book: the create page asks "Who’s this book from?", and whatever you type prints on the dedication page as From … — which is what turns the book into a gift with the giver’s name on the first page.

Honest limits

The illustrations are AI-generated. They are checked automatically for accuracy before a book ships and failed pages are regenerated, but this is generated artwork, not a commissioned illustrator.

One child per book. The hero is a single child. That constraint is what keeps the likeness consistent across pages.

Ages 2–10. Outside that band the story pacing has not been tuned.

Frequently asked questions

Is the story really written for my child, or is it a template with their name in it?

The story is generated for the specific child — their name, age, gender and the theme you pick all shape the text, and the illustrations are drawn from their photo. If you open "Deeper customization" on the create page you can also feed in their interests, people or pets to include, a lesson and a setting, and the story is written from scratch around those. That path takes 4–6 minutes instead of about a minute.

What age is this for?

Ages 2 to 10. The age you enter changes the story: shorter sentences and repeated refrains at the younger end, richer plots and more dialogue at the older end.

Can my child be the hero without me uploading a photo?

Yes. There is a "Don’t have a photo? Choose a character instead" option on the create page, which lets you pick an illustrated character instead of uploading a photograph. The story personalization is unchanged; only the likeness comes from a preset rather than your photo.

Can siblings or the whole family be in the book?

The illustrated hero is one child — Akoni books are built around a single child so the likeness stays consistent and the book reads as theirs. On the bespoke path you can name people and pets to weave into the story text. If you want a book for each of two children, make two books.

How many pages is the book?

35 pages at 8 × 8 inches square, with up to 16 illustrated story pages. The rest is keepsake matter: a title page, a dedication page, a fillable bookplate, a glossary of names in the story, a first-reading page, a draw-your-favourite-part page, an about-me page and photo-paste memory pages.

How much does it cost?

A digital PDF is $9.99. An 8 × 8 inch printed softcover is $29.99 and a hardcover is $39.99, both including the digital PDF and free shipping. A second language adds $10 to any format.

Can I see it before I buy?

Yes, and no card is required. The free preview shows the child illustrated on the cover, the dedication page and the first three illustrated pages. You only unlock the full illustrated book if you like what you see.

What if my child does not like it?

Email within 30 days of delivery and Akoni refunds you in full. You keep the book.
